Thousands of years later, a sperm whale was swimming through the San Francisco Bay.
This was already wrong. Sperm whales are deep-ocean creatures. A sperm whale in the Bay is a glitch in the natural order.
It was the late 1960s. The heat was coming down hard on everyone in the manufacturing chain.
During a pursuit — cops on their tail — Owsley's people made the only call they could.
They dumped the lab.
Not a stash. An entire laboratory's worth of raw LSD crystal. Millions of hits of uncut, Bear-quality acid — straight into the Bay.
The whale swam through the cloud.
The whale began to vibrate.
Not metaphorically. Its molecules began oscillating at a frequency that doesn't exist in normal physics. The acid was so pure it didn't just alter perception — it altered position in time.
It vibrated backwards.
The water shimmered. The air tore.
A forty-ton sperm whale materialized in the shallows of an ancient Phrygian river. Eyes like dinner plates. Skin crackling with residual psychedelic charge.
It bit the nearest thing it could reach.
The whale's acid-saturated saliva merged with the golden curse still running through his blood. Skin turned whale-blue. Bones restructured. His right index finger kept glowing.
